What are calories exactly?

“Calories are a way of tracking the body’s energy budget,” Emma Bryce, an English science journalist, explains in her Ted-Ed video “What is a Calorie?” (Source 1).

“A calorie is defined as the amount of energy needed to raise to raise the temperature of one kilogram of water by one degree celsius,” she continues. “A healthy balance is achieved when one gains that much energy that we lose”. Thereby :

If If we constantly put more energy into our body than we burn, the excess will gradually be stored as fat in our cells, and we will gain weight;

If If you burn more energy without refueling, you lose weight.

“The calories are therefore a unit of measurement that allows us to measure the energy that we consume and use”, she summarizes. It is also a measure of the amount of energy that foods store in their chemical bonds…including non-alcoholic drinks!
