Your decision is made: you want a baby. This desire for a child often involves stopping contraception. In France, about 40% percent of women on contraceptives take the pill. So, what about the chances of getting pregnant after such a contraceptive?
Since the birth of the pill, it has always been the subject of a thousand and one belief. The most common it would promote female infertility. At the origin of this hypothesis without scientific foundation: the mode of action of the pill which consists in blocking ovulation.
A release of hormones hormones
The pill thins the uterine lining and blocks the way to sperm by making the mucus secreted by the cervix thicker. This result is obtained by the diffusion of synthetic hormones: progestin and estrogens.
Some women then mistakenly believe that the normal cycle will no longer take place. In reality, the ovary regains its activity as soon as the contraceptive is stopped. The proof: you can even be pregnant by forgetting a single tablet.
Would women who have difficulty conceiving a child have had a better chance by not taking the pill? That’s what many couples think, attributing their failure to prolonged use of the pill. However, you should know that women can be affected by hormonal disorders even before taking contraceptives.
A recommended time after stopping the pill
Usually seven days after stopping your pill, ovulation may occur. But some doctors advise waiting for two cycles before considering pregnancy. Immediately after stopping the oral contraceptive, there may indeed be no ovulation, or the ovulation is of poor quality.
The egg therefore risks being eliminated naturally.
Count an average period of seven months to a year to notice a pregnancy after stopping your pill. It is not necessarily shorter if you used a progestogen pill or micropill (contains only one type of hormone, a progestogen). And it’s the same average waiting time after removing an IUD.
If you are pregnant right after stopping, don’t be afraid, pregnancy has every chance of coming to term. Don’t forget that difficulties can also come from a time that has simply passed. Age is a big factor in decreasing your fertility.
