To be healthy, lose weight, keep fit… there are many solutions. Is diet included? What is a diet in reality? What is the difference between a diet or a fast What are the benefits of a diet? Answers and advice from Romina Courtaut, dietitian-nutritionist.
Definition: what is a diet? What is the difference with diet?
Diet is a total or partial temporary absence of food (of a particular food or food category) for medical, hygienic or personal reasons.
The diet is a modification of the usual diet for therapeutic purposes or to meet more specific physiological needs. He will often be guided by a health professional who will give a prescription for dietary changes, for the treatment of an illness for example. There is a wide variety of diets.
“A diet is accompanied by a nutrition professional with the aim of setting up a more complete and sustainable diet over the long term, and adapted to the needs of each person”, explains Romina Courtaut, dietician-nutritionist.
“Some people follow a particular diet to improve their health, especially in light of medical history. Cultural backgrounds or personal preferences may also influence choices. Your healthcare provider may have recommended a particular diet to manage a medical condition,” says the Heart & Stroke Foundation (Source 1).
Diet: Why diet? What are the reasons for?
“The terms ‘diet’ and ‘diet’ are very often associated in everyday language, even if the term ‘diet’ is used much more often”, explains Romina Courtaut. So there is this idea that diet and diet are always associated with weight loss. But this is not necessarily the case: the reasons can be various!
For example, it is recommended to follow a specific diet before undergoing a medical examination such as a colonoscopy: “it is a precise prescription for a given moment, and when the examination is finished, after the diet period we will resume a normal diet.
The diet is therefore not necessarily a diet whose goal is weight loss. It can also be a wellness gesture or a medical prescription.
However, many specialists recommend it to detoxify the body: we hear a lot about water diets, sports diets or to deacidify the body, which accumulates toxins to the point that the various organs “filter” such as the kidneys, the liver, the intestines, skin and lungs end up being saturated. Romina Courtaut is of a completely different opinion.
