What is a “cold snap”?

The expression “cold snap” is generally used to designate winter viral diseases. But can you get so sick from the cold or is it just an expression? Insight from Dr Jean-Christophe Nogrette, general practitioner.

How long do these symptoms last?

Viral illnesses usually heal within a few days (3 to 10 days on average). In some cases, however, they may evolve or become more complicated. Do not hesitate to consult a doctor if the symptoms persist.

Similarly, digestive disorders heal spontaneously in a few days, but can become complicated and cause dehydration, especially in the elderly and infants. So be vigilant.

Causes: how do you “catch” a cold snap?

“Cold snaps” are not only related to the cold, but to the encounter with a virus that infects us. As mentioned above, viral infections are more frequent in winter, because the body is often very stressed and less resistant against viruses. Not to mention that the latter sometimes benefit from better survival thanks to the cold. In addition, too dry air (heating, air conditioning, etc.) can weaken our mucous membranes and make us more susceptible to viral infections.

How to treat a cold snap?

The treatment of viral diseases requires a lot of rest. If it is a simple cold caused by a rhinovirus, cover yourself, take the necessary painkillers to relieve your headaches and carry out frequent nose washes with sea water. If necessary, take the treatment adapted to the pathology that the doctor will have diagnosed you with (etiological treatment). In the case of gastroenteritis, for example, if lifestyle and dietary measures are not enough to calm the symptoms, it is possible to use digestive dress or anti-diarrheal drugs.
